The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Lloyd M. Barnett (ASN: 0-382458), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery D, 5th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa in November 1943. While directing the fire of his battery on an enemy tank attack, Captain Barnett, operating from an extremely forward position, was cut off by the enemy tanks. He continued to fire effectively on the enemy until communications with his battery were broken. Then Captain Barnett crossed an area covered by heavy artillery and small arms fire, ordered a cannon company to move to the crest of the hill, where he personally adjusted direct fire on the enemy. His coolness and bravery under extremely dangerous circumstances directly contributed to the establishment of the Division beachhead. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
