Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 51 (September 25, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Bradley P. Bacon (ASN: 0-376621), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from April through August 1943. When his company’s forward observer had been wounded by enemy fire, Captain Bacon, on his own initiative, worked his way under heavy artillery and machine gun fire to the observation post and skillfully directed effective mortar and artillery fire upon the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
