The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John S. Scott (ASN: 6992343), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Armored Division in North Africa. On ** **** 1943, near *******, Sergeant Scott distinguished himself in action against an armed enemy. During the withdrawal of the battalion to a new position, the battalion commander’s car became stuck in a wadi and was unable to move. In spite of intense fire from enemy artillery and tanks and with complete disregard for his own welfare he towed the command car to secure ground. The courage, bravery and voluntary risk of his own life to save the vehicle and its crew displayed by Sergeant Scott are highly commendable and reflect great credit upon the command and the Armed Forces.
