The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Chaplain’s Corps) Fred Elwyn Andrews (ASN: 0-404032), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. Throughout a fiercely fought battle, Chaplain Andrews encouraged and inspired the men of his battalion by his coolness under fire, indefatigable energy, and firm spiritual convictions. His compassion for the wounded moved him to remain in the most hazardous of positions without fear. His fearless actions won him the undying admiration and respect of the officers and men he served. Chaplain Andrews’ gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
