The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles L. Bell (ASN: 37219067), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from April through August 1943. During an advance upon the enemy, Private Bell observed a wounded and helpless soldier lying exposed to heavy enemy fire. Although repeatedly fired upon by the enemy, Private Bell, with the aid of another enlisted man, left his place of comparative safety, proceeded to the wounded man, and successfully evacuated him. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
