    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Joseph W. Anderson (ASN: 0-11185710), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Cannon Company, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Moderscheid, Belgium, on 21 January 1945. Despite an intense artillery, mortar, and machine gun barrage, Second Lieutenant Anderson fearlessly crossed hazardous terrain and went to the aid of a seriously wounded soldier. After skillfully treating the injured man under continuing heavy fire, he rem oved him to a position from which he could be evacuated to an aid station. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Anderson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
