Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 41 (August 28, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Barney Reagan Anderson, Jr. (ASN: 0-465317), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from March to July 1943. During the advance of his unit, Lieutenant Anderson led a small patrol five miles beyond our front lines to secure a bridge crossing and cleared a small mine field as he proceeded forward. This action, accomplished at night without proper equipment, permitted the uninterrupted advance of his unit. Lieutenant Anderson’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
