The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Leon Abercrombie (ASN: 33146928), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. When the radio on his vehicle failed to function during an enemy counterattack, Private Abercrombie proceeded through a heavy enemy artillery barrage to the rear in an effort to have it repaired. Although his vehicle was immobilized by enemy shellfire before he completed his mission, Private Abercrombie remained under heavy fire and guarded it against capture by infiltrating enemy troops. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
