The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant General George Edward Stratemeyer (ASN: 0-3893/5A), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating as Command Pilot in aerial flight during the period 18 June 1944 to 18 July 1945, over territory in Burma, China, and adjacent countries where exposure to enemy fire was probable and expected. General Stratemeyer eagerly accepted flying hazards above and beyond that normally expected of his grade and assignment. He engaged in numerous long, arduous missions over water, impenetrable jungle and high, rugged mountain terrain, through all types of treacherous weather peculiar to the China and India Burma Theaters. To coordinate the offensive effort of his command in the re-capture of Burma and in carrying out his mission of protecting the air route to China during this period, General Stratemeyer flew 379 hours in a heavy bomber and operated into and out of forward fields constructed for use of fighters and medium transports only. This display of initiative and courageous determination to execute his responsibilities with the utmost efficiency despite the personal dangers involved, reflects the highest credit upon General Stratemeyer and upon the Army Air Forces of the United States.
