The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) George R. Brownell (ASN: 0-1321483), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3d Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 15 March 1951, in the vicinity of Yulsil-li, Korea. Company K was assaulting high mountain enemy positions in an attempt to gain control of that objective and the adjacent pass through which the regiment was to advance. The company suffered many casualties as it forged ahead up the steep and barren slope against the most stubborn resistance. Captain Brownell organized the remaining men into one group for a final assault on the position. Again the attack was blocked and heavy casualties suffered. With complete disregard for his own safety, Captain Brownell single-handedly and daringly charged through the hail of enemy rifle and machine gun fire, destroying the enemy positions with well-directed hand grenades. The gallant conduct and outstanding leadership displayed by Captain Brownell reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
