The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) George R. Brownell (ASN: 0-1321483), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy of the United Nations while serving as Commanding Officer of Company K, 3d Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division. Captain Brownell distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism in action against enemy aggressor forces in the vicinity of P’ungch’on-ni, Korea, on 18 and 19 May 1951. On 18 May 1951, Company K was attacked by an enemy force of great numerical superiority intent upon totally destroying the company. During the two-day period in which the hostile forces mounted numerous assaults against the company, Captain Brownell calmly remained exposed to intense enemy fire to direct the defense of his unit, successfully stemming the desperate onslaughts of the enemy. When the company was forced to fall back under tremendous enemy pressure, Captain Brownell personally led his troops in fierce counterattacks to restore the friendly lines. His aggressive leadership and personal bravery were directly responsible for the successful defense of the company positions during this crucial operation and resulted in the infliction of staggering losses upon the enemy. The extraordinary heroism displayed by Captain Brownell on this occasion reflects the greatest credit on himself and is in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) George R. Brownell (ASN: 0-1321483), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3d Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 15 March 1951, in the vicinity of Yulsil-li, Korea. Company K was assaulting high mountain enemy positions in an attempt to gain control of that objective and the adjacent pass through which the regiment was to advance. The company suffered many casualties as it forged ahead up the steep and barren slope against the most stubborn resistance. Captain Brownell organized the remaining men into one group for a final assault on the position. Again the attack was blocked and heavy casualties suffered. With complete disregard for his own safety, Captain Brownell single-handedly and daringly charged through the hail of enemy rifle and machine gun fire, destroying the enemy positions with well-directed hand grenades. The gallant conduct and outstanding leadership displayed by Captain Brownell reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
