Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 90 (June 13, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Warren W. Bennett (ASN: 0-1316523), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 9th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 March 1945, in the vicinity of Kalenborn, Germany. While advancing against strongly defended enemy positions, the assault elements of the Infantry were subjected to intense enemy mortar and machine gun fire. With complete disregard for personal safety, Lieutenant Bennett immediately exposed himself to the heavy enemy barrage to crawl forward to a point of vantage from which he could obtain direct observation on the enemy emplacements. Despite the withering machine gun fire which incessantly threatened his Observation Post, he effectively directed and adjusted accurate mortar fire on the enemy gun positions and entrenchments. Then, laying a smoke screen on the enemy, he enabled the Infantrymen to continue their attack and secure the objective. Lieutenant Bennett’s bold and fearless leadership and courageous actions contributed materially to the success of the operations.
