The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Anthony J. Zimmick, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 143d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy on 22 January 1944. On that date, Private Zimmick’s regiment was ordered to attack enemy entrenchments beyond a strategic rive. They attacked against artillery, nebelwerfer, mortar and small arms fire and across ground protected by mine fields, booby traps and barbed wire. Although many men were lost, Private Zimmick and his comrades attacked and penetrated deep into enemy territory. Private Zimmick lost his life in the fighting which followed to secure the positions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
