The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade William E. Wood, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 152d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 31 May 1944, in the vicinity of Mount Spino, Italy. Although he was in the center of the most concentrated part of the bombardment, he worked calmly and efficiently, stopping profuse bleeding by expert application of a tourniquet and treating a sever chest wound with extraordinary proficiency. When he was wounded in his right arm by a hurtling shell fragment, he quickly dressed his painful wound to stop the bleeding and immediately continued his treatment of the injured. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
