The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer (W-1) Karl H. Walden, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with the 189th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 7 May 1969. Warrant Officer Walden distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commander aboard a UH-1H helicopter. Responding to an emergency declared by an allied unit, he braved intense enemy fire to extract the beleaguered unit. As his aircraft was loaded with the last of the allied soldiers he was informed that one trooper still remained in the landing zone. He remained on the landing pad under heavy small arms and mortar fire until the last soldier appeared and climbed aboard the aircraft. Due to the outstanding ability and courage displayed by Warrant Officer Walden the mission was successfully accomplished. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
