The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer (W-1) Karl H. Walden, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 189th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 22 May 1969. Warrant Officer Walden distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commander aboard a UH-1H helicopter participating in an armed assault southwest of Dak To. The first aircraft approached the landing zone, deposited its troops, but was suddenly subjected to automatic weapons and mortar fire resulting in the death of the pilot. The lift was temporarily discontinued and the encircled troops’ position was desperate, until Warrant Officer Walden volunteered to attempt to reinforce the isolated squad. Deliberately exposing his aircraft to the intense enemy fire he successfully deposited his troops. Warrant Officer Walden’s extraordinary act of heroism inspired the remaining aircrews and the lift was completed after his valorous example. His quick response to a desperate situation turned the tide of battle and was the key to the successful completion of the mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
