Headquarters, 36th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 141 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Mansel O. Williams (ASN: 0-411633), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 12 December 1943. Lieutenant Williams was acting commander of an Infantry company in defensive positions on a mountainside. Although constantly harassed by artillery and mortar fire he supervised the preparation of the defensive positions and inspected the fortifications. The problem of supplying the troops with ammunition and water was made difficult by the steep slippery trails necessarily utilized as a supply route. To expedite the deliver and distribution of vital supplies he frequently worked his way over the torturous mountain trails. While so engaged, he was killed by the explosion of an artillery shell near him. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
