Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the Far East, General Orders No. 110 (May 5, 1945)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Colonel (Infantry) Robert Homer Soule (ASN: 0-11888), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 188th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 11th Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces near Tagaytay Ridge, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 3 February 1945. While advancing through a narrow defile, Colonel Soule and his men encountered heavy enemy machine gun, mortar, and artillery fire. Colonel Soule analyzed the situation and then directed an attack. During the attack and under intense fire, he crawled 50 yards to his radio transmitter and was wounded en route. The transmitter was inoperative but he secured another and radioed instructions for troop deployment. Moving to an exposed position, he directed the ensuing attack to a successful conclusion. Colonel Soule’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
