The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Charles L. Sharrer, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 133d Field Artillery Battalion, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on the Fifth Army Front in Italy, on 11 and 12 February 1944. Second Lieutenant Sharrer, a Forward Observer, was stationed at an observation post with the infantry company, skillfully judged the occupied positions on a hill and added concentrations to the prepared defensive firing. He valiantly held his post all day and, on the following morning, put his radio into operation under a heavy artillery barrage. In the furious enemy attack which followed, Second Lieutenant Sharrer directed accurate fire that was essential to the repulsion of the enemy. He disdained personal security in the face of tremendous enemy fire and tirelessly transmitted his orders until fatally wounded. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Sharrer, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
