Headquarters, 36th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 122 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William A. Rogers (ASN: 0-1288126), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 142d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 28 January 1944 at Cassino, Italy. Leading a four-man patrol, Lieutenant Rogers crossed a treacherous river and moved forward over heavily mined terrain under continuous fire of the enemy. Although pinned down on several occasions by concentrated mortar and machinegun fire, he continued his advance, deploying his men and gathering information essential to his mission. Remaining in this hazardous area until a thorough reconnaissance was completed, he returned to lead his battalion in a swift assault on the objective he had scouted. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
