The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant James T. Porter (ASN: 11007280), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 143d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action on 16 March 1945 in France. As Company B approached a town the men were subjected to heavy machine gun, mortar and tank fire and were forced to take cover. The platoon aid man was wounded, and Sergeant Porter crawled 75 yards under the enemy fire to assist him to safety. On learning that his squad leader was missing, he assumed command of his squad, reorganized the men and led them in the attack. After they occupied the first house, a wire fence under heavy enemy machine gun fire stopped their advance. In full view of the enemy Sergeant Porter crawled to the wire and, as bullets struck within inches of him, cut a path through the fence. His men then rushed from the house, passed through the obstacle and continued the advance. By his daring initiative and aggressive leadership, Sergeant Porter contributed materially to the success of the attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
