The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Stanley M. Pauksta (ASN: 0-1691596), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 133d Field Artillery Battalion, 36th Infantry Division, in action on 15 August 1944 in France. On D-Day in the invasion of Southern France Lieutenant Pauksta flew his artillery observation plane from an improvised flight deck of an LST. In order to secure the maximum possible flying time he installed an auxiliary gasoline tank in the rear seat of the plane. Flying continuously for three and a half hours he made a constant reconnaissance for enemy targets and directed artillery fire on positions both on the beach and inland. By his initiative and skill, Lieutenant Pauksta materially contributed to the outstanding success attained by the ground forces during this critical operation. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
