The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Paul V. Mitchell (ASN: 0-1290454), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 March 1945 in France. Lieutenant Mitchell was assigned the mission of directing five men in constructing an urgently needed foot bridge across an important river. A protective smoke screen drew enemy mortar and artillery fire, but he and his men bravely proceeded with their work until an intense mortar concentration forced all but Lieutenant Mitchell to take cover. Realizing the importance of accomplishing his mission, he instructed his men to remain in a covered position while he completed the bridge. Although shells were crashing within 15 yards of him, he successfully constructed the remainder of the bridge, enabling friendly troops to evacuate casualties and carrying supplies across the river. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
