The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Gerhard A. Miller (ASN: 36236357), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Anti-Tank Company, 142d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action on 11 December 1944, in France. While supporting a rifle company in the defense, Corporal Miller, a gunner in a machine gun squad, spotted a group of enemy soldiers attempting to flank the unit’s position. His effective fire forced the enemy to withdraw to a house approximately 100 yards away. Corporal Miller then led two men across exposed terrain to a small ditch and along the ditch to within in short distance of the building. He directed his men in delivering accurate machine gun fire into the hostile position. As a result of his aggressive action, three of the enemy were killed, several more were wounded, and the remainder were forced to flee.
