The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Charles A. Meuth (ASN: 18202461), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action on 19 August 1944 in France. When Company B’s attack on a town was halted by heavy fire from an enemy strongpoint in a castle, Sergeant Meuth led his squad around the left flank and approached the castle from the rear. Enemy automatic weapons fire forced his men to stop and take cover, but Sergeant Meuth, with bullets ripping through his equipment, valiantly crawled 150 yards to a position from which he could fire on the enemy. With accurate fire from his sub-machine gun, he killed a German officer and two machine gunners, and he killed a fourth enemy soldier with a hand grenade. Calling his men forward, he again led them along the mined road into the town. When the advance was halted by hostile machine gun fire, he deployed his squad to fire on the gun emplacement. Then, with one companion, he assaulted the strong point and, by firing his sub-machine gun and hurling grenades, eliminated the position. His courage and aggressiveness contributed greatly to the success of the attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
