The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Michael R. Gallinoto (ASN: 0-1043635), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Anti-Tank Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. On 8 April 1945, at 1700 hours, near Schonan, Germany, First Lieutenant Gallinoto first reconnoitered the area his platoon was to attack, killing two and capturing four enemy in the course of his reconnaissance. Well ahead of his men, with enemy bullets barely missing him, First Lieutenant Gallinoto then led his platoon forward against a force of seventy-five enemy, killing twenty-five, capturing twenty, wounding an unknown number of the enemy, and forcing the remainder to flee after a brisk fire fight. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
