The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Edward C. Mermod (ASN: 0-1318067), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 142d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 1 February 1944. During an attack on a hill, Lieutenant Mermod led his infantry platoon forward over extremely precipitous and snow covered terrain. The advance was halted by intense enemy machine gun fire. He quickly deployed his men and exposed himself to enemy fire in an attempt to determine the strength and disposition of the enemy forces and to locate a more suitable route of advance. He was reported missing in action the following day. Second Lieutenant Mermod’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
