The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Infantry), [then Captain] Orrin O. McDaniels (ASN: 0-403714), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of Company L, 3d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Kora. On 1 August 1950, when his company was leading the battalion column in a move to join other elements in the vicinity of Pugye-ri, Korea, and was attacked by numerically superior hostile forces, Major McDaniels immediately deployed his company to meet the threat. Braving the heavy hail of enemy machine gun and anti-tank gun fire, he remained in his exposed position on the road to direct and supervise the execution of the movement off the read to the positions of high ground nearby. By his courageous and aggressive leadership, Major McDaniels inspired his men to engage the enemy in a fierce fire fight to repulse the attack with severe losses to the hostile forces. Such outstanding leadership reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
