The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Paul Maliborsky (ASN: 33604607), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company C, 143d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division in Italy, on 22 September 1944. Private First Class Maliborsky with others in an infantry regiment, were ordered to cross the swift flowing Rapido River in Italy against intense enemy fire. Many casualties resulted during the crossing and some men were drowned. Private First Class Maliborsky made it across the river and fought valiantly in action against the enemy until the American positions were overrun in an enemy counterattack by superior forces, and Private First Class Maliborsky was killed. His great fortitude, tenacity of purpose and devotion to duty against vastly superior enemy forces constitute an outstanding example of fighting courage that will long endure as an inspiration to all who witnessed or have knowledge of his valorous deeds.
