The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Harry W. Lund, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Mediterranean Campaign, on 11 February 1943. Sergeant Lund led his squad across open terrain in an attempt to flank an enemy machine gun nest while the enemy attacked his Infantry company with intense artillery, machine gun and rifle fire. He placed his men in firing positions, then crept alone to the opposite flank and opened fire, tricking the enemy into believing that they had been surrounded. Taking advantage of an opening, he threw a hand grenade into the machine gun nest, destroying it. The then fired on enemy snipers, killing or wounding several. Staff Sergeant Lund’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
