The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Bertram H. Lebeis, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 21 January 1944. Ordered to cross a river and assault enemy positions on the high ground beyond, First Sergeant Lebeis made the crossing with leading elements of his Infantry Company and advanced through wire entanglements covered by machinegun fire. He helped reorganize the men and, amid the confusion caused by intense enemy fire, supervised the digging in of defensive positions. He moved about among his men, directing their efforts and encouraging them until the increased intensity of hostile fire and the number of casualties made the positions untenable. In the face of continuous machinegun and mortar fire he maintained control of his men at a time when good organization was vital. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
