The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Ivan J. Landry (ASN: 34150805), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 142nd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations, on 31 January 1944. Sergeant Landry was leader of a five-man Infantry patrol assigned to make contact with the battalion prior to an attack against strongly-held enemy positions. He chose a direct route despite the intensity of artillery fire falling in the area. En route, he discovered a 12-man enemy patrol returning to its own lines with information of the impending attack. Skillfully deploying his men, he surprised the numerically superior enemy and captured them before resistance could be offered and their outpost alerted. Disarming the prisoners, he swiftly completed his mission. He was reported missing in action on 4 February in a subsequent engagement. Staff Sergeant Landry’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
