The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Private Charles T. Alvis (ASN: 36867635), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 90th Infantry Division in northern France. On 13 August 1944, near ****, France, when a vehicle containing French forces passed a road block which Private Alvis was supporting, the vehicle hit a mine immediately setting it on fire and wounding the occupants. The fire of the vehicle threatened to explode other mines near it but despite this danger, Private Alvis and two comrades entered the burning vehicle and removed the wounded Frenchmen and two American soldiers nearby to a place of safety.
