The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Clark K. Kidney (ASN: 32029690), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 36th Infantry Division, in action on 24 May 1944, while working at a first aid station in Italy as a litter bearer. Private First Class Kidney volunteered to go to the front line positions to aid a number of wounded soldiers. He advanced fearlessly in the face of intense machinegun and mortar fire and approached the wounded subject to a heavy artillery barrage. Heedless of his personal safety, he worked indefatigably administering expert first aid and evacuating the wounded men. While he was so engaged he was mortally wounded by a shell explosion. His sacrifice inspired his comrades to a greater display of courage in caring for the wounded. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
