The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Floyd H. W. Griebel (ASN: 37421831), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Anti-Tank Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. On 20 April 1945, at 1600 hours, in Nurnberg, Germany, Technical Sergeant Griebel skillfully led an anti-tank platoon in a rifle assault on a fortified enemy strongpoint. Staying twenty yards in front of his men under Panzerfaust, machine gun and small arms fire that barely missed him, Technical Sergeant Griebel engaged one enemy squad, killing three Germans with sub-machine gun fire. In a two hour period, Technical Sergeant Griebel and his platoon killed twelve enemy and took eighty prisoners. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
