The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lucius S. Nottingham, Jr. (ASN: 13184521), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. On 26 January 1945, Private First Class Nottingham, near Riedwihr, France, directed the tank destroyer fire upon two Mark VI tanks, 400 yards away, killing two enemy and forcing the tanks to withdraw. After enemy artillery had knocked out his Observation Post position, Private First Class Nottingham crawled and ran 300 yards to locate another Observation Post, halting along the way to return the small arms fire of enemy snipers 50 to 100 yards away. Private First Class Nottingham inflicted several casualties upon the enemy and put the new Observation Post in operation in a minimum time. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
