The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James V. Jenkins, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, *** Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on the Cassino front in Italy, in February 1944. On that day men on both sides of him were falling to the severe enemy small arms and mortar fire, followed by a grenade battle. An enemy grenade landed between Private First Class Jenkins and his platoon leader. Private First Class Jenkins dived for the grenade, grabbed it and threw it back at the enemy where it exploded. By his gallantry he saved several lives in his own platoon and knocked out many of the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
