The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Albert Hrabsack (ASN: 33268200), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Battery A, 131st Field Artillery Battalion, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 23 to 30 October 1944 in France. When an infantry battalion was cut off and surrounded by the enemy, the forward observer’s radio was the only means of communication with friendly forces. Throughout the seven days that follow, he and two comrades took turns in operating the radio. Although they had little food and were exposed to severe weather conditions and heavy enemy fire, they worked tirelessly transmitting fire missions and sending code messages which enabled the air force to parachute supplies to the unit. Their courageous and determined efforts materially aided the battalion in maintaining its position until other units could fight their way through and re-establish contact. Private First Class Hrabsack’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
