The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Russell R. Holster, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy on 30 January 1944. During an attack on the enemy’s strongly defended position on the slopes of a hill in Italy, Sergeant Holster, 81-mm. mortar section leader, was attached to an Infantry assault company as the forward observer for his section. Under constant enemy sniper and artillery fire, he advanced with the company until he was pinned down by the intense grazing fire of a machinegun located in a nearby house. He immediately registered in his mortars but discovered that his position did not afford sufficient observation to direct the needed supporting fire. He quickly worked his way forward under intense small arms fire to a position which commanded a view of the entire occupied area. He then directed the heavy concentration of mortar fire which made it possible for the rifle companies to advance and capture the house, taking some 25 prisoners. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
