Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 257 (July 15, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) John A. Campbell (ASN: 0-1998051), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion, 3d Infantry Division. On 25 January 1945 at about 0600 hours, in the vicinity of Rosencrantz, France, while engaging the enemy in mortal combat, First Lieutenant Campbell’s Tank Destroyer was knocked out by an enemy 77-mm. anti-tank shell, and two of his crewmen were seriously wounded. He ordered his crew to dismount and take cover, and then pointed out the enemy anti-tank gun to another Tank Destroyer who knocked it out. He then administered first aid to his wounded men and found that two of his men were missing. Despite the fierce enemy fire which was landing all around, in an attempt to find his crewmen, First Lieutenant Campbell raced to the position of his destroyer, only to be captured by 14 enemy soldiers who were surrounding it. However, he convinced the enemy soldiers that they should be the captives and not the captors, and turned them over to an infantry platoon who arrived on the scene of action. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
