Headquarters, 36th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 237 (July 1, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Johnny R. Hendley (ASN: 0-2056285), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 133d Field Artillery Battalion, 36th Infantry Division, in action on 15 August 1944 in France. On D-Day in the invasion of Southern France Lieutenant Hendley flew his artillery observation plane from an improvised flight deck on an LST. In order to secure the maximum possible flying time he had an auxiliary gasoline tank installed in the rear seat of his plane and remained aloft for three hours, directing artillery fire on the enemy positions. Repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire, he flew inland over hostile territory and determinedly searched for the enemy guns which were shelling friendly troops. Upon completion of his mission, he landed under artillery fire on an unprepared field a mile inland from the beach. By his courage and skill Lieutenant Hendley materially contributed to the outstanding success attained by the ground forces during this critical operation. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
