The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert B. Harris (ASN: 37879501), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 111th Engineer Combat Battalion, 36th Infantry Division, in action on 22 and 23 March 1945 in Germany. An enemy-manned pillbox, overlooking the main street in a town in the Siegfried Line defense, prevented friendly forces from using the route as a supply line. Although aware that during the day many attempts to destroy the emplacement had been frustrated by accurate enemy sniper fire, Corporal James J. Cavalcante and Private First Class Robert B. Harris volunteered for the hazardous task of reducing the fortification with demolition charges. Under covering fire from infantry troops, they advanced at dusk with their heavy charges and, climbing to the top of the pillbox, placed them in position. Undaunted by enemy sniper fire they exploded seven charges, demolishing the position and forcing the surrender of the fourteen occupants. As a result of their gallant actions, the supply route was opened, materially aiding the friendly troops in their spearhead attack against the heavily fortified line. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
