Headquarters, 36th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 19 (October 23, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Raymond G. Gutierrez (ASN: 38025519), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 36th Infantry Division, in action on 9 September 1943, in the vicinity of Agropoli, Italy. When his company was attacked by five enemy tanks, Sergeant Gutierrez, automatic rifleman for an advance squad, placed his automatic rifle over a stone wall and opened fire on the tanks. The tanks returned his fire and the rifle was knocked from his hands while two bullets passed through the top of his helmet and one injured his right arm. Though wounded and armed only with a hand grenade and knife, he moved past the tanks and advanced under machinegun fire. He flanked the machine gun nest, expertly threw the hand grenade, and knocked out the gun position, killing three enemy soldiers. Another enemy soldier, who appeared to be uninjured, attempted to kill him, but he quickly drew his knife and stabbed the enemy soldier to death. He performed these heroic deeds under his own initiative, without orders from his superiors. Sergeant Gutierrez’ gallant action reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service. Great credit upon himself and upon the armed forces of the United States.
