The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Ronald Frank Green (ASN: US-53452751), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Green distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 26 September 1968, while serving as a Squad Leader with Company C, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, on a combat mission. When his unit came under intense fire from a hostile force, Sergeant Green led his men forward to engage the enemy and repeatedly exposed himself to the fire in order to direct them into the best fighting positions. As the battle continued, Sergeant Green saw that one of his men had been seriously wounded and needed immediate medical aid. He courageously rushed through fusillade to the casualty and was pulling him to an area of safety. It was during this selfless act that Sergeant Green was fatally wounded. Sergeant Green’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a Viet Cong force was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
