The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Roy J. Grabe, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a machine gunner in Company C, *** Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on Mount Castelone, Italy, during World War II. On that day when the enemy attacked so close he could not fire at them because of the fixed position of his gun mount, Private First Class Grabe threw grenades until he saw that it was not deterring the enemy attack. He tore his machine gun off its mount, dropped to one knee and fired from the hip, stopping a German counterattack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
