The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Raleigh Moffitt (ASN: 34147923), United States Army, for gallantry in action with serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. On 27 December 1944, at 2200 hours, near Sigolsheim, France, Sergeant Moffitt, while guarding three prisoners, single-handedly engaged an enemy force armed with machine pistols and rifles at a range of forty yards. Although bullets barely missed him, Sergeant Moffitt dueled with the Germans, killing two enemy and wounding two. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
