Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), General Orders No. 1535 (April 6, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Thomas Alan Gray (ASN: US-51579476), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Specialist Fourth Class Gray distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism in action on 18 February 1967, while serving with Company B, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during an engagement with an enemy force in the Republic of Vietnam. When a machine gunner on a nearby position expended all of his ammunition, Specialist Gray, with complete disregard for his own safety, raced under a hail of enemy fire across fifty meters of open field to obtain the badly needed ammunition, returning across the same dangerous terrain. Purely voluntary on his part, he repeated the same feat on two more occasions. Still not satisfied with his actions, and still under heavy enemy fire, Specialist Gray maneuvered to another area to retrieve vitally needed medical supplies for the medical Aidman in his platoon. He then continued to place a heavy volume of fire on the enemy positions, at the same time adjusting supporting artillery fire, until he was mortally wounded by an enemy sniper. Specialist Gray’s gallant action stands in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
