The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Guenther C. Enge (ASN: 36691741), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3rd Battalion, 143d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 5 December 1944, in the vicinity of Ostheim, France. As Company K advanced in the attack on Ostheim, the leading elements were suddenly pinned down by heavy automatic weapons and self-propelled gun fire. Private First Class Enge, a runner, voluntarily dashed across open terrain through heavy enemy fire to the supporting armor. As shells burst around him and the bullets ricochetted from the vehicle, he stood on the leading tank and pointed out targets to the leader of the tank platoon. He then started back across the exposed ground to the company commander, but he was painfully wounded by machine gun fire. As he returned for medical treatment, he assisted a more seriously wounded comrade to safety. By his courage and initiative, he enabled his comrades to continue their advance and seize their objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Enge, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
