Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 257 (July 15, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Christopher J. Crowell (ASN: 31238237), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. On 18 April 1945, at about 1300 hours, in Nurnberg, Germany, Staff Sergeant Crowell, while covering the advance of his squad from a position fifty yards to their front, stood erect and exchanged fire with an enemy strongpoint. Staff Sergeant Crowell, standing erect detected three enemy 125 yards away attempting to outflank him, and, firing a burst from his sub-machine gun, killed all three, enabling his squad to advance and continue the assault. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
