The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Roger Lee Hubbard (ASN: 64102736), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Hubbard distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 31 October 1967, while serving as a Rifleman with Company C, 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 50th Infantry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, during a combat mission near Quang Nheim, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit’s defensive perimeter came under a hostile attack, Private First Class Hubbard exposed himself to the enemy fire to locate the assaulting enemy force. He then began placing a heavy volume of effective fire on the hostile soldiers. Disregarding the wounds he sustained during the initial assault, Private First Class Hubbard continued to deliver accurate fire. At this time he was mortally wounded, but his action contributed greatly to the successful repulsion of the enemy attack. Private First Class Hubbard’s gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
